I Got It Wrong

Artisans are actually the business world’s secret agents for success.

Yesterday I wrote about Artists belonging in the corporate world due to their desire to keep being uncomfortable, and pursuing new ideas for their customers, ergo being ‘entrepreneurial’.

On reflection, I think it’s actually artisans that belong there.

Take a couture leather jacket; you would want it to be made by the expert. The person who has worked for 10,000 hours on the same leather previously. They know the subtleties of the material so can craft something perfect.

Artists are not artisans.

Artists push into new territory regularly so have not necessarily mastered the materials in the way an artisan would.

Artists push for new ways for their ideas and ideologies to be understood and depicted.

Artisans push for perfection with their materials.

So I think the business warriors that dwell in LinkedIn, include more artisans than artists.

But is an artisan an artist first? Who simply explores until they find their rhythm and material(s) and keeps going to mastery?
